Plain-language definitions for common commercial waterproofing, drainage and building-envelope moisture control terms.

Building envelope

The roof, walls, windows, doors and below-grade assemblies separating interior and exterior conditions.

Waterproofing

A system intended to resist water passage under expected exposure.

Drainage plane

A concealed or exposed layer arranged to direct water outward.

Flashing

A durable water-shedding component at transitions and openings.

Membrane

A sheet- or liquid-applied layer used for water control.

Positive-side waterproofing

Waterproofing applied on the side exposed to water.

Negative-side waterproofing

Treatment applied from the opposite side of water pressure or entry.

Overburden

Pavers, soil, insulation, ballast or other materials placed above a membrane.

Efflorescence

Visible mineral deposits that may appear where water moves through masonry.

Controlled water test

A planned test using water to investigate leakage under defined conditions.
